Well, Black Bay and Kama Bay are now classified as thick ice even with all the snow. From Kama Bay to Rossport is classified as thin ice again after wavering back and forth from thin to medium. Off Perch point, there are a good 12 inches although slush may be problematic along the trail on and off the lake. Bays End towards Thunder Bay is medium ice with thin ice in the rest of the bay away from the protection of the cliffs.
Slush is bad on smaller inland lakes with lake superior gaining a few inches of slush when holes are punched through. The colder temperatures coming should stiffen the slush back up. Black Bay is reporting over two feet of solid ice, and the slush is at a minimum.
Ice formation is slow with an abundance of insulating snow and warmer temperatures which are expected to drop next week.
Nipigon River Bait and Tackle have abundant minnows with a fresh delivery just arrived. Rentable sleighs, augers, rods equipment and maps are also available.
Snow cover is three feet in the area around Nipigon with more just north, west and east. Driving snow throughout the region makes for deep snow near shorelines and along roadways and open spaces.

Karhu Nordic Ski Trails on Maatas Road is reporting beautifully groomed trails ready for adventure. Call 372-0012 for information.

Superior Cross Country Ski Club which operates groom trails at Rainbow Falls and Rendezvous Ski club trails in Nipigon are reporting plenty of snow and groomed trails. They even have a trail at the Golf Course in Terrace Bay now by the Aguasabon Nordic Ski Club.
Snow machines are around everywhere now, packing commonly used trails and making the trails passable via walking and snowshoe. Snowshoes are must for hiking in the woods and maybe bring a friend or six.

Wind forecast looks good for the weekend with some gusting early next week but nothing too substantial. I use the app/website windy.com which seems pretty reliable.
