Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Nipigon River Barbless?
No, Lake Nipigon only requires barbless hooks – either by pinching or buying special barbless hooks.

Is live Bait Banned ?
No, Live bait is permitted throughout the area with the exception of Lake Nipigon ice fishing where only artificial baits are allowed.

Can you camp anywhere?
If you are an Ontario resident you may camp anywhere on crown land (with time limitations) free of charge. Others will need to obtain a crown land camping permit to have displayed while camping on crown land.

What fisheries management unit is it?
Nipigon is located at the joining point of multiple fisheries management units. These include FMZ’s 6 (Nipigon and west),7 (Nipigon and east) ,9 (Lake Superior). The demarcation between 6 and 7 is highway 11 north to 801 north. The demarcation from 6 to 9 are the hydro lines at the mouth of the Nipigon River.

What can I catch?
Brook Trout, Lake Trout, Rainbow Trout, Northern Pike, Walleye, Jumbo Perch, Lake Whitefish, Lake Cisco, Coho Salmon, Chinook Salmon, Pink Salmon, Burbot and smallmouth bass are common to the area around Nipigon.

When is the best time to come ?
This depends on what species you are targeting. Spring time is usually a great multi-species time however salmon is more of a fall fish and Jumbo perch is an ice fishing opportunity. There are year round choices for nearly all species of fish in the area.
